Even if you just work with him a few minutes a day, this will build and strengthen the bond between you and your puppy and he will begin to trust you. Your puppy wants to please you. You will have to be patient as he learns what to do and what not to do. You'll want to housetrain him as soon as possible, but wait until he is about four or five months old so that he has the bladder and bowel control to be successful. Other than housetraining your puppy, there are few basic commands he should learn. Once he knows these commands, it will be easier for you to work with him. One easy command to teach your puppy is to come. This is a great command, especially if your pup is rambunctious and liable to get into trouble. When he will obey a "Come" call, you can get him away from danger quickly and safely. To teach this command you will need a leash and collar. Get down on your puppy's level and say "Come" at the same time you are gently pulling on his leash.  When he makes the smallest move in the right direction, praise him and give him a treat. Reinforce this behavior until the puppy learns the command. The next basic command to teach your puppy is to sit. This is a pretty easy command to teach since your dog naturally sits in certain situations. Begin by presenting a treat to your puppy. Hold it in front of your dog's nose. Keeping it close to the nose, move your hand up. Your dog will be watching the treat and his head will naturally follow your hand movement. As his head moves, his bottom will lower into a seated position. When he begins to sit down, say "Sit" and give him a treat. Praise him when he does it correctly and keep reinforcing this behavior until he learns it. Another important command to teach your puppy is to stay. Start by asking the puppy to sit. Hold up your hand, palm toward the puppy and say, "Stay". Step back a few steps and reward him with a treat for not moving. Gradually move farther back and increase the steps before you reward him. Reward your puppy when he stays put as you're moving. For more information on training your puppy, check out the Dogarooni dog training material on their website.
